Shozu saga continues

Ok, so the last post may have been a tad premature. Shozu seemed fine on the N93 at first, but queue up a couple of posts and try a couple different things, then go back to the camera, and the phone’s hosed in precisely the same way as the N80i. Slow and sluggish with nothing working right. Uninstall Shozu and everything’s back to normal.

I know they say the N73 is their phone of choice, but I have to say to the Shozu guys, you don’t want me installing it on an N73 and finding problems again. You won’t like what I have to say if that goes south. So in the interest of fairness, I’m not going to do that for a day or two. I’m back to the N80i becaise I like Gizmo project, and Shozu…well it’s on the back burner for now.

    Hi Ken
Sorry to hear you’re one of the few having problems. ShoZu is fairly memory intensive due to the nature of the application. We monitor the file system in the background to provide one-click functionality, and if you’ve got the thumbnail view open in the background, we are also rendering thumbnails, resizing images (if you’ve selected this option), backing up contacts (if enabled) and using your data network. All in all, this is a fairly tall order for a phone but has been tested extensively for the phones listed on our site.

I feel you may have other memory resident applications running in the background. Could this be the case? We test ShoZu with only minimal 3rd party software installed on the handset, as it is impossible for us to make allowances for the hundreds of other applications people could be installing. Also ensure you have the new ShoZu 3.1 released on 12th Feb, as we have incorporated some memory efficient features.

In future we hope to address memory usage further and also on our wish list are other functions like an “off” button. At the moment, however, your best bet is to install our app onto a clean phone for the greatest user experience.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,
    Mark

Thanks Mark. Actually, my latest attempts with both the N80i and the N93 are running the phone with no memory resident or thrid party apps of any kind. They were essentailly out of the box with Shozu as the only installed application.

Since I’ve done new downloads repeatedly since the 12th, I’m pretty confident that I had the latest release. For me the only way to tell what release I’m getting is to download and install it and go to the about screen. Unfortunately, the web site doesn’t give any indicator as to what release a user is going to get linked to, nor does the file naming convention provide any indication. That’s just a quirky sort of problem.

Given that the only software on the phones is Nokia software that came with it, and that no third party apps are present, I think the memory issues can only be a combination of memory management techniques in the Symbian OS and something in Shozu.

I have tried and had similar problems with other third party software. It was just software that didn’t particularly interest me, so I just killed it and moved on. Shozu, on the other hand, adds real value, so I’ve become a pain in the neck. I know. Sorry.

I’m confident it works well on the N73. I’m just not using that as a primary phone at this point and without WiFi, I find it the least desirable among the set I have to work with.

    Thanks
