Why the Nokia N800 Rocks

I have problem written more within a shorter time period about this device than any of the other Nokia devices I´ve had the privilege of testing. In short, because this device is about two steps beyond incredible when you really figure out how to use it.

I´m wriiting this post on the N800 via the web interface to Wordpress, I could as easily post via email, maemo-blog or WordPy (dont actually have that last one installed right now). In large part, I wanted to try using the browser interface for this because the N800 browser is pretty phenomal.

First, here´s a picture of my ¨office¨ setup at the moment. N800, at least for the moment.

My network connection is, for the moment, bluetooth pairing through a Nokia N73. The N800 is using the GPRS/broadband connection in the phone to get to the net. It also uses WiFi, and it somewhat intelligently shifts between them. Itś´configurable within several areas to ¨use any available connection.¨ For me, that means it uses one of multiple WiFi network in my home office, and it automagically shifts over the the N73 when I walk out the door (assuming that I am carrying both devices).

Always on Internet, based on the assumptiion that you BYOB - bring your own broadband, Even it it only had WiFi connectivity, it´s an amazingly handy tool. It´s not a toy. It is a real workhorse tool.

Note the picture now includes a bluetooth keyboard. Sure it has some rudimentary input capabiltiy built it, That stuff all works great, but it isnt´enough for a serious road warrior. I don´t now about you, but I can´t generally work on my laptop on a plane. Not in coach. But this par allows serious work,

As I said, the browser ie phenomenal, but hereÅ› an advantage over WIndows Mobile nobody has mentioned - multiple browsers, I have two open right now. This window and one to Flickr so I could grab the emebd code for that picture, Cut and paste simplicity.

I also have Gtalk running, with Twitter updates coming in, my contact list open, and email running (checking in background every 5 minutes). And email is configured to hande two accounts right now, but could do more if I wanted.

This isn´t just a handheld, it´s a handheld that really does multi-windowing well. Toggling between applications is seamless and no extensive memory swapping needed.

I have tried pairing the N800 with other devices, and it does so easily.

Ive worked in this sort of mode in the past. I have written white papers and most of a book chapter on my Treo Ive worked in this sort of mode in the past. I have written white papers and most of a book chapter on my Treo with an infrared keyboard. But the functionality you get as a road warrior with this
combination simply surpasses anything you can do
with other combinations. It just surpass. It annihilates
the other solutions. Period.

I know I´ll be writing more abouut this, so stay tuned.

Keep on rocking man! The tablet is truly a powerhouse. Though I think it’s unfortunately something most people have to experience to understand.

    Bluetooth Keyboards and The N800…

Both Ken Camp and PhoneBoy are gushing over having their new N800’s. Now they extoll the virtues of having them augmented by a keyboard…….

I’ve been reading so much about the N800. The most appealing part of it is that it’s pretty much like a mini laptop. The wireless capabilities to access true broadband make it VERY appealing.

Danny - While I have found a VNC client that works, I haven’t seen anyone yet successfully run it to an external monitor. For me that would be a key presentation tool if possible. It’s something I’ll be watching for if I see it anywhere.

Vic -It is very appealing to be sure.
