Thoughts on Mobile Phones

This is really a predecessor to some thoughts in response to a post Andy Abramson recently wrote that set me to thinking.

I’ve used a Treo700W since the day they were announced. Now it’s potential renewal time on my Verizon contract and my experiences with the Nokia N-series over the past several months have led me to watch mobile solutions very closely.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the Windows Mobile platform is going nowhere. It’s time to move to another platform. I’ve already got the Nokia stuff well covered under a Cingular/AT&T plan. Frankly, I don’t like Cingular/AT&T as a carrier. Don’t think much of T-Mobile either.

I’ll keep the Cingular stuff and definitely use it, but right now I’m thinking that the Blackberry 8830 World edition is likely to be my next personal cell phone. No camera, but it will serve the other needs I have. It will jockey with the Nokia N95 for first choice, but when it comes to a Qwerty keyboard, it will clearly win out.

Nothing firm, just today’s thinking.

im interested to know why you like verizonm better than cingular, specifically since youŕe a fan of theb Nokias, and could easily get a Treo on cingular.

For me, Verizon coverage and rate structure just does a better job than any other carrier. I’m inclined to abandon the Treo. Palm is dead and doesn’t know it. Windows Mobile is stagnant and unimpressive at this point. I’ll keep carrying both technologies (CDMA & GSM) between Verizon and Cingular.

It will be interesting to see if AT&T changes their rate structures once the iPhone is out and/or Verizon catches up to them in terms of number of subscribers.

Verizon may overall have better coverage, but if I don’t go to those places, who cares. AT&T does just fine for me, and I can use my spiffy Nokia GSM phones. :)

    Ken,

Have you thought about the E61i or the new E90. The keyboard makes them great and the camera is there when you need it. Sorry, no Lifeblog or Flickr yet though.

I agree about the Nokias all around. I’d try an E61 or E62, but I’m really pretty intent on maintaining both the Verizon and Cingular services. No Nokia options on Verizon. That’s the one that will probably roll to the Blackberry World edition. I’ll still be a Nokia guy ont he Cingular service.
