An N95 video before camera problems overran the device

Here’s a dashboard video I shot on Monday over the steering wheel on my way back into the office from lunch. I wanted to do a quick comparison.

The N95 camera went into an odd reboot loop today. I don’t think I’m the only one experiencing it. No more video until that camera comes back to life. I’m using the other N-series phones again.

Spring Fever with Swing Fever - N93 video

One thing that constantly amazes me when shooting video with the N93 is the audio quality

Another Nokia N93 Tripod-mounted Video Test

This evening I mounted the N93 on a regular photographer’s tripod and stood talking to the camera. Shot at best quality, it’s really a test to see how it captures my motion (I’m not one to sit still) and how it might work in the environments described in the video.

A Nokia N93 vlog post

I got the DT-22 Nokia tripod courtesy of the Nokia Blogger Relations program today. 15 minutes later, it was on my desk with the N93 pointed back at me to try out a vlog post.

Grand Central Megapost - News, Audio, and Video - Is this a grand slam?

I’m going to begin this post fulfilling a promise to my friend Om Malik. Tonight at ETel he laughingly said I owe him a public apology. So, Om, this is for you…when it came to the early call on GrandCentral, you were right my friend, and I was wrong. For those of you who don’t understand that, I was less than enthusiastic about GrandCentral early on. That’s changed and today I’m a big fan. To the point, my GrandCentral number is now the single phone number on my business cards.n Color me a fan…even an evangelist.

I get all the news briefs as they come out from a lot of folks. Today I got the press release from GrandCentral that’s at the very bottom of this post. As luck and hard work would have it, I also has some time scheduled with Craig Walker today at the ETel conference. He spent quite some time with me, and we recorded our conversation as a podcast chat. I invite you to come listen in to my chat with Craig, but don’t run off to quickly, because there’s also a special video below.

Here’s a video of GrandCentral’s demo shot tonight at the O’Reilly ETel conference LaunchPad event hosted by Om Malik. Video shot with a Nokia N93, compliments of the Nokia Blogger Relations Program. I think I shot it at 30fos full quality. As I recall, it’s about 7 minutes

GrandCentral New Feature Notes
GrandCentral has added a series of new features and functions to our award winning service. We’ve also found a useful way to blend GrandCentral with T-Mobile’s Faves that is core to our mission to keeping the cost of phone services down, while offering more value to our customers.

Web Button
GrandCentral users can now create a button that can be easily embedded in any web page, allowing anyone to call them for free.

When someone clicks on the GrandCentral button, GrandCentral will call them, by connecting the call to the GrandCentral number.

All GrandCentral settings like selective ringing, custom greeting as well as Ringshare can be customized for that button.

Examples of the Web Button application include:

  • eBay auction: GrandCentral button can send callers to a voicemail with a description of the item on sale. Callers can leave a message and the GrandCentral user can decide whom to call back.
  • MySpace page: profile can let people calling without sharing GrandCentral user’s phone number
  • Blogger can let readers call to leave feedback. Messages can then be posted in the reply thread (see embed feature below)
  • Web sites can let visitors call them easily
  • Or just about anywhere the Web Button can be placed.

Embed Code
GrandCentral users can now share any voicemail they receive by just pasting the embed code provided on any web site.

Examples of application include:

  • Personal web page with family messages
  • Bloggers who want to share audio feedback as part of the comment thread
  • Companies who want to post audio testimonials

New web interface
As the service is gearing towards post-beta, so is the web interface. We’ve redesigned the web interface to allow for even more intuitive navigation and added some functionality:

  • Redesigned player
  • Map now shows caller number location
  • New Ringshare upload manager

T-Mobile Faves’ Cost Saver
GrandCentral lets users choose in their settings if they want their GrandCentral calls to:

  • forward the caller’s Caller ID so they know who’s calling or
  • display their GrandCentral number so they know it’s a GrandCentral call and they can pick up safely and have their call handling options

In the latter case, if the phone they take the call from is a T-Mobile cell phone and they have registered their GrandCentral number as one of their “Faves”, then all incoming calls to their T-Mobile cell are now free, regardless of who the caller is.

Nokia N80i Video at Dusk

I’m doing a bit of playing with the Nokia video things again.

A video I took on the drive home at dusk with the Nokia N80i.

Vlogging with Sightspeed

The prior post was done with the Nokia N93 and posted via blip.tv. This one’s done with SightSpeed. Interesting comparison in terms of quality.

Aside to Peter Csathy - Now a SightSpeed client that runs on the Nokia N-series would be a serious tool.

SightSpeed’s Enhancements today - Click-toConverge Video

One of the feature enhancements I personally have been most vocal about with my friends at SightSpeed has been the ability to embed a video, complete with player, directly in a blog post. I want the simplicity and elegance of SightSpeed for creating video. Yes I have video production software. I use VlogIt! It’s fantastic. But for me, it’s a tool I use to compile a presentation or training video. It’s not how I want to talk to readers and other bloggers on a regular basis. It requires post-production work that I want to outsource.

Now I let SightSpeed handle all of that. One click to record and another to stop. That’s it. And SightSpeed handles the encoding. Then they give me the HTML embed code to insert in my blog post that’s up top there. And they still give me the URL to click to go see the video the way they used to. That URL is very handy for sharing in email, IM chat, or over something like Twitter. In this post http://app.sightspeed.com/vm/lpa89lynticsx6gbehd5nga82e6rkgy3/6tf8/en_US/1/ will take you to the same video embedded here.

And, there’s that click button over on the sidebar that’s come in very handy too. SightSpeed not only enables video blogging, they excel at video/voice conversation.

Do you blog? Want to do video blog posts? Want to send video Christmas cards to family? OK, I’m a fan and sometimes I just won’t let it go. Go check it out! Frank, Jeneane, JR, Winston, Mary, Brenda,Alec..yeah, I’m talking to you. All of you. Give your voice some video for Christmas.

SightSpeed Enhancements Increase Ease and Enjoyment of World’s Best Personal Video Services

If you’ve read here for more than a week or two, you know I’m keen on SightSpeed, both as a solution for voice & video, and as a company. I’m really excited about this announcement of a new enhanced version 5.0 of SightSpeed. First, remember that. This isn’t a new release. It’s an enhancement to version 5.0. I will tell you I’ve heard whispers of a new version in the works, but that will come later.

Update Edit: I logged back into SightSpeed just moment ago and find the server side enhancements are up and running in production. I wanted to be among the first bloggers to use them, in part because I’ve been such a vocal proponent. This is something I’ll be using more myself and I hope you explore the advances the good folks at SightSpeed are making every day.

This enhancement set is of particular interest to me, because I’ve bugged the SightSpeed team about enhancements quite a bit. The video blogging changes in this release are something I feel like I personally really pushed them for. In fact, I’ll update this post with a SightSpeed video blog insert using the new feature as soon as I can. But the click-to-call and other enhancements are important too. This is just an example of how SightSpeed continues to show the way in video solutions

SightSpeed Enhancements Increase Ease and Enjoyment of World’s Best Personal Video Services
  • A multitude of upgrades to Version 5.0 make award-winning SightSpeed service even better
  • Basic and Pro plan subscribers will benefit
  • Enhanced ordering system makes it easier to give the gift of video calling for the holiday

Berkeley, Calif.–Dec. 7, 2006—SightSpeed, the leading provider of personal video services over the Internet, has announced numerous enhancements to SightSpeed 5.0, the current version of its award-winning Internet communications software.

“Based on feedback received from users and bloggers, we’ve been working on a lot of improvements since we released version 5.0 in July 2006,” said Peter Csathy, SightSpeed CEO. “Now we’re announcing them all at once as part of Enhanced SightSpeed 5.0.

“There’s something here for all SightSpeeders, whether they’re on the SightSpeed free plan or have upgraded to our premium SightSpeed Pro service,” Csathy continued. “The best news is that users don’t need to download anything to take advantage of the enhancements. These are all SightSpeed server-side changes that don’t reside on user software.”

Here’s a summary of the changes available with Enhanced SightSpeed 5.0:

  • SightSpeed Pro plan subscribers (i.e., small-business and power users) will now be able to record three-minute video messages for e-mail or video blogs (vlogs)—a 50-percent increase in recording time, and six times more recording time than available to free users.
  • All users who want to share their SightSpeed-produced video messages (in particular, bloggers who wish to vlog) can now easily copy and paste the relevant HTML snippet for the video player directly into their Web site or blog for a significantly more compelling overall user experience.
  • SightSpeed “click-to-call” video buttons will now have greater visibility and usability, and can easily be pasted into community or social-networking profiles (such as MySpace, Facebook and others) or other personal or business Web pages. The benefit is that subscribers can give others the ability to easily click-to-call the SightSpeed user through a Web interface, without the need to download any software. This is significant for individuals and business users alike.
  • The notification that is automatically sent to video-message recipients has been redesigned with a cleaner, more compelling look and feel.
  • Checking out the latest SightSpeed beta service, SightSpeedTV will now be easier because the link is no longer hard to find. Users who want to experience this truly live video place-shifting functionality will now find SightSpeedTV front and center within the SightSpeed interface, thereby giving them a uniquely compelling personal television experience anywhere in the world.
  • International users who want to upgrade to the Pro plan or make voice calls to regular and cell phones will now have an easier way to pay for those services and become power SightSpeed users. SightSpeed has now significantly improved its billing and transaction-processing operations to make it easier for users outside the U.S. to subscribe to fee-based SightSpeed services and pay securely by credit card.
  • With the holiday season upon us, there’s no better way for far-flung friends and families to stay connected than with a gift of SightSpeed. An enhanced online ordering system now makes it much easier to give SightSpeed starter kits and have them shipped anywhere in the U.S.
  • And finally, thanks to an agreement with Commission Junction, online referrals from independent Web site owners will now be eligible for commission when the referrals result in a sale of SightSpeed services.

When it was released in July, SightSpeed Version 5.0 became the first complete suite of easy-to-use personal video services delivered over the Internet. The services are available for both Windows PCs and Macintosh personal computers, and are interoperable between both.

“While other providers offer video calling, SightSpeed prides itself on its call quality based on 10 years of video experience and continuous advancements,” said Lynda Starr, senior analyst, IP Communications, Frost & Sullivan. “It’s SightSpeed’s commitment to staying front of the pack that makes its services best-in-class.”

Through SightSpeed, users can place free video calls, leave video messages, or post videos to their blogs or personal Web pages. SightSpeed also offers unlimited PC-to-PC voice-only calling (works great for Macs, too), and provides calling to and from traditional and cell phones. And users can try SightSpeedTV, now in beta, for personal viewing of TV on a computer equipped with a TV capture-card—anywhere in the world, complete with real channel-surfing.
